The cardinal Bernardino Spada was compelled to adapt the copious amount of paintings to the scarce space on the walls of his gallery.
The Palazzo Spada where the gallery is located is not equipped with proper storage and the art ministry officials couldn’t display the copious artworks in any different way.
The original display dictated by the taste and views of those times was aimed at richly filling up the walls in an opulent space decoration involving murals, antiquities and furniture intended as a whole.

2) Why the alcove originally located at palazzo Torlonia in piazza Venezia is partly set-up at Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi?

The palace was demolished to let space for the building of the Altare della Patria.
The Torlonia family moved to Palazzo Braschi at the end of the 19th century and rebuilt here their favorite room.
The palace was flooded by the Tiber river on the 28 december 1870.

3) Which peculiarity characterizes the lion on the ceiling at Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini?

One of his eyes is open and allow to secretely watch the salon from a room on the back.
On pope Urbano VIII’s birthday (5 April) a ray of sunlight hits the lion as symbol of regality.
It was originally an ox and was re-painted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1630.
